Key Facts

  • The use of thermoset resin systems in Filtration can be viewed in four areas, however the use of the product in filtration usually provides more than one simple function and may include in some cases all four functions:
    * Sealing
    * Adhering
    * Casting
    * Gasket
Sample applications

Gas mask
  • Sealing
    Typical applications –gas masks including MOD, diesel and petrol filters, air filters, food production plant filtration, water filters including use in polluted rivers and lakes, clean room technology.
  • Adhering
    Typical applications – bonding of media, bonding of end caps in air, gas and liquid applications including petrol, diesel and Aeroplane fuel, high temp furnace filters, nuclear filtration, Membrane bonding.
  • Casting
    Typical applications include – performance filters for vehicles, end cap replacement for liquid air and gas filtration applications, house hold appliance filtration.
Industrial air filter
Properties

Sealing – Filtration relies heavily on an effective media to seal against unwanted air, gas or liquid flow by-passing the filtration system. Polyurethane, Silicone and Epoxy are all used in the construction of filters to facilitate this function.

By simply pouring in the chosen material an effective long term seal is created. Depending on application this seal can be highly adhesive in nature bonding two substrates together to allow an absolute seal. High temperature, moisture and chemical resistant, anti bacterial / fungal and re-sealable can all by incorporated into the chosen Thermoset resin to give the client peace of mind that the filter will continue performing even in the most harsh of environments.

Adhering
Filter construction requires the effective joining of numerous substrates together to affect an air or liquid tight seal in application.

Using the latest technology Greenfield Polymers can formulate the resin system to suit either a given production process requirement or application requirement.

Casting
Latest technology has seen the move away from the use of thermoset purely as an adhesive and sealant and has become in most cases the chosen method to perform dual functionality. By using the thermoset as an actual substrate, rather than simply the adhesive / sealant between two substrates the use of multiple materials has been reduced and performance increased.

They can also be engineered to give hardness ranging from Glass to gel and in low shore variance can also replace the need for additional gaskets by providing sufficient compression set to facilitate sealing against a housing.

Gasket
Filters often need an effect seal against unwanted air, liquid or gas flow. This can be viewed as an additional seal external to the main filter to ensure an air tight fit into a housing. By using a low shore hardness product the compression set allows the material to be compressed into a housing providing an tight seal.

Greenfield Polymers offer three different systems types depending on application:-

Re-sealable gels – pour into a channel and allowed to cure. The seal will allow penetration a form around the penetrating substrate. The seal can be broken by removing the substrate but then allow re-entry due its unique property. Typical applications include clean room HEPA and filters within air conditioning units.

Foamed in place gaskets – these are applied by XY onto a flat surface, channel or mould. They rise in place to form a convex continuous seal on flat surfaces or mould themselves to the given channel or mould shape. They are self skimming allowing excellent sealed surface finish. They provide sealing by the compression of the in place gasket to the housing. They are best suited to large scale production and are a continuous automated system. Typical applications include standard vehicle air filters, domestic appliance filters and in line industrial dust extraction units.

Low shore hardness elastomers - By using a low shore hardness elastomer a seal can be created in the same way as a foamed in place gasket. They are best suited to low scale production due to the ease of mixing and applying.
